San Diego’s District 2 includes the communities of Point Loma, Midway, Bay Park, Morena, Bay Ho, and the beach communities of Mission Beach, Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach.
The district includes some of the city’s leading retail areas, oldest residential areas, biggest tourist attractions, most unique small businesses and largest employers. The United States Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard and the San Diego International Airport call our district home.
We are also proud to have San Diego’s most popular beach area, and the entirety of Mission Bay Park, one of San Diego’s most precious and well-loved public spaces. Cabrillo National Monument, which is the nation’s second-most visited National Park, sits at the southern-most point of the community.
However, residents and businesses of District 2 have been suffering under lazy leadership and poor priorities.
Bursting water pipes, an old sea wall, potholes, and a lack of solutions for storm water issues and flooding have topped the list of community needs for years. Alcohol-related crimes plague beach neighborhoods, and short-term vacation rentals threaten our existing shortage of housing units, putting our most vulnerable residents, including our seniors and young families, at risk of shelter insecurity. Homelessness has reached emergency levels in a majority of our communities, hurting tourism and costing us money as leaders direct resources to punish the homeless instead of to fill the affordable housing gap. Water run-off and commercial pollution also continue to threaten our waterways.
District 2 is one of the best places to live in the country, but it can be better, especially for our young families and elderly neighbors. Hard work, people-oriented priorities, and inclusive values will improve quality of life and public safety for all of us.
It’s time for progress!
